Veteran's Exemption

The Veteran's Exemption is available to qualifying combat veterans or his/her surviving spouse and may be applied towards your property taxes or vehicle registrations. 

Eligibility Requirements

1. You must be a Wyoming resident for at least 3 years at the time of claiming the exemption.

2. You must be an honorably discharged veteran with a copy of your DD214 (discharge papers).

3. You must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have been in the active military service of the United States during one of the following time periods:
    • World War I
    • World War II (12/7/1941 - 12/31/1946)
    • Korean War Emergency (6/27/1950 - 1/31/1955)
    • Vietnam War Emergency (2/28/1961 - 5/7/1975) 
  • Have been awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal of other authorized service or campaign medal indicating active service for the United States in an armed conflict in a foreign country. 
  • Have a compensable service-connected disability certified by the Veteran's Administration.

Surviving Spouse

A surviving spouse of an eligible veteran who has not remarried may also qualify for the Veteran's Exemption and is entitled to apply with a death certificate and DD214.

Amount of Exemption

$3000 annual exemption applied to:

  •  The assessed value of your primary residence which equals approximately a $200 reduction off your property taxes OR 
  • A motor vehicle which equals a $90 reduction off your vehicle registration.

Where to Apply

You can apply at your local Assessor's Office.

Deadline for Filing:

On or before the 4th Monday in May of each year. This deadline applies only if you intend to use the exemption towards your property taxes. You can use the exemption for vehicle registration at any time of the year, however if you claim the exemption after the 4th Monday in May, it will go towards your future year exemption.
